New Delhi: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was caught red-handed by
Delhi Police's vigilance unit for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a retired inspector in exchange for allowing repair work at his residence. Police said SHO has been sent to District Lines and his role is also being probed.
According to police, ASI Sudesh Kumar Yadav, posted at the Model Town police station, was found taking a bribe on Monday, following a complaint filed by the retired inspector. In his complaint, the inspector stated that when he began civil work at his residence, ASI Sudesh and other beat officers in the area halted the construction. A demand for Rs 4 lakh was made, with a threat that the work would not resume unless the bribe was paid. Eventually, the amount was negotiated down to Rs 2 lakh, the retired inspector said in his complaint.
The complainant further stated that he approached the SHO of the police station who allegedly asked him to speak with ASI Sudesh directly.
Along with his complaint, the retired inspector provided a pen drive containing audio recordings of conversations with various police officials regarding the bribe demand.
Upon receiving the complaint, the vigilance unit swiftly initiated legal action. A raiding team was assembled. Around 6.30 pm on Monday, ASI Sudesh called the complainant to his office, where he again demanded the money. After a brief exchange, he accepted the bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant. The vigilance raiding team acted immediately and apprehended ASI Sudesh. The tainted bribe money was recovered from his possession. A case was registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Last month, the urban development department clarified that police permission is not required for construction activities. Police have urged citizens to report police misconduct via the helpline (1064, 011-23417995, 9910641064) or visit the Delhi Police Vigilance Unit office.
