New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has pushed back the completion timeline for the Gole Market complex restoration to March 2026.
Officials confirmed that all necessary drawings, layouts and designs for the project were finalised recently, which is why the deadline was pushed back.
The council initiated the on-site work in Oct 2023 with an initial target to complete the conservation and restoration of the heritage building, which is set to become a museum by Oct 2025.
"Restoration of Gole Market is going on in full swing, but we have extended the expected deadline for project till March 31, 2026. We will, however, maintain the original architectural elements, including the internal arch structures of the complex in the restoration process," the official said.
The project includes the redevelopment of the heritage building as a museum dedicated to women achievers in various spheres. Restoration work involves retrofitting, rehabilitation and conservation of the 1,407sqm building at a cost of Rs 21.6 crore.
Among the salient features will be a glass dome in the central courtyard, an insulated roof, central air-conditioning, ornamental fittings and fixtures, and a provision for a subway and lifts. There will also be a provision for public facilities and accessibility for differently-abled people, while the original fenestration and entrance archways will be reinstalled. The museum will be connected to Doctors Lane and Bhai Veer Singh Marg via an underpass.
The scope also encompasses the future construction of parking facilities, though NDMC is finalising the parking site location. "Development of parking and subway are part of the project. And we are working on these projects also," the official said.
LG VK Saxena visited the site to review the progress on Nov 5. He was informed by officials that retrofitting and overall strengthening of the existing structure and walls are progressing well, and the arches are beginning to take shape. "Since Delhi is prone to earthquakes, we are ensuring steel reinforcement in the foundation to add strength to the structure," an NDMC official had said earlier.
The LG also reviewed the redevelopment of surrounding areas, including the construction of a service block and a subway connecting Gole Market with approach roads. The service blocks will have utility areas, a food court, and a gallery for displaying artworks.
