Held up for year & a half, Shankar Chowk subway in Gurgaon may be completed by September
Gurgaon: The long-awaited pedestrian subway at Shankar Chowk on NH8, a critical junction close to the city's office hub and metro station, is now expected to be completed by Sept.
The 100-metre-long subway, being developed by DLF Foundation as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, aims to provide a safer passage for the over 20,000 to 25,000 pedestrians who brave the traffic-heavy junction daily. The project — cost pegged at Rs 25 crore — is currently around 65% complete. With no infrastructure for pedestrians, crossing the busy national highway has remained a daily hazard, particularly during peak office hours. Once operational, the subway will have two access points — one near the National Media Centre and the other close to DLF Downtown — and will include lifts, lighting and safety features to ensure smooth pedestrian movement.
"We are aiming to finish the installation of the box structure across the highway within this month. That will allow traffic movement to resume normally. The remaining work, including staircases and lifts, should be completed by Sept," an official from the construction team said.
Construction began in Feb 2023 with a 12-month completion target. However, the project faced several challenges, including resistance from a nearby residential society over the proposed location of an entrance that stalled the construction for months. In addition, permissions for shifting underground utilities such as gas pipelines and sewer lines, as well as approvals for tree felling and traffic diversions, delayed the progress.
Shankar Chowk is among the busiest junctions with several office complexes in Cyber City, DLF Downtown, and the Rapid Metro station within its proximity.
