NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old man attacked a 19-year-old woman in Delhi Cantonment on Sunday night. After stabbing the woman several times, the attacker then turned the knife on himself, stabbing himself in the stomach. Both of them are in critical condition in hospital.
The victim has been identified as Vijaylaxmi, a resident of Old Nangal in Kirby Place, while the attacker was identified as Amit, who lives with his elder brother in Sadar Bazar in the cantonment.

The Delhi Cantt police station received information about a stabbing at the Kirby Place bus stop. "On enquiry, we found that the youth and the woman had known each other for the past year and were friends. Due to some dispute between them, the youth stabbed her in the neck and abdomen and then attempted to harm himself by stabbing himself in the stomach," said Surendra Choudhary DCP (South West). Both the youngsters were rushed to a hospital, where they are currently being treated for their injuries.
The incident occurred on an isolated stretch of road with fast-moving traffic. TOI visited the area on Monday and found only a single man at the almost deserted bus stop. Blood marks were visible on the ground there. The road was empty except for vehicles and there were no shops nearby either. A police source disclosed that the investigators found the two were having problems. "They hadn't been getting along and hadn't spoken for a few days. The youth called her to meet him on Sunday, and during their interaction, a heated argument broke out, following which he stabbed her," the source said.
A police officer confirmed that Amit was on the ventilator in hospital and the investigating officers were waiting for his condition to improve to question him on the stabbing. While Vijaylaxmi's family alleged that the youth had been troubling her for a while, police said that they are waiting for the woman who is currently in the ICU, to regain consciousness and give her statement on the matter.
According to the family, Vijaylaxmi was employed by a shop in Sadar Bazar and Amit too worked in a shop in the same market. That is how they got to know each other.
Hours before the incident, CCTV footage accessed by TOI shows the two engaged in an argument around 4pm. The footage captures them walking together from the Sadar Bazar area towards Kirby Place. Initially, everything appears normal — the duo is seen talking, and at one point, the woman ties her hair. Withina minute, however, the youth can be seen shoving the woman toward a car while holding her arm. The pair then move toward a tree where the quarrel continues briefly. After that, they appear normal again for a few hours — until the violent stabbing occurs around 9.30pm.
The victim's 25-year-old elder sister told TOI, "I saw them together in Sadar Bazar during the evening around 7pm. Everything seemed normal between them. I knew they were friends, so I didn't think much of it. We expected her to come home at the usual time. But the next thing we heard was from the hospital about her being critically injured. An auto driver who took her there called us and we rushed to her immediately." A case under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against Amit at the Delhi Cantt police station. Further investigations are under way.
