Chennai: Justice M S Ramesh and Justice N Senthil Kumar – serving judges of
Madras high court – paid a surprise visit to the Puzhal Central Prison on Wednesday to assess the living conditions first-hand.
During their three hours in the sprawling complex, they inspected the quarantine block, high-security block and the women's wing. They also reviewed the registers to see if transparency and order were being maintained.
They heard the inmates' grievances and engaged with paralegal volunteers — prisoners trained to guide fellow inmates on filing appeals and navigating legal processes.
During the initiative, seen as a step forward in ensuring access to justice for all, they ate in the kitchen to check the quality of food and to see if the prescribed nutritional and hygienic standards were being met.
In the women's prison, they held discussions with inmates on safety, hygiene, and facilities available. They were accompanied by senior prison officials, including superintendents.tnn
