Yamunanagar: Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Monday laid the foundation stones for a major power plant unit and a biogas facility in Haryana's Yamunanagar district, pledging to accelerate the state's progress as part of his broader vision for a "Viksit Bharat" (developed India).
Addressing a large public gathering, Modi underscored the state's spiritual and historical importance, calling Haryana the land of Ma Saraswati, Mantra Devi, Panchmukhi Hanuman, and Kapalmochan. He also marked the 135th birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar, reaffirming his govt's commitment to social justice and economic empowerment in line with Ambedkar's ideals.
"Yamunanagar is not just a city — it's a vital industrial hub," Modi said, highlighting its role in plywood, brass, steel, and equipment manufacturing. He recalled his association with the region during his time as the BJP's state in-charge, praising the local work ethic and enterprise.
Power push, clean energy drive
The centrepiece of Monday's event was the foundation stone laying of the 800-megawatt third unit at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant. Modi emphasised that boosting electricity production was essential to sustaining industrial growth and eliminating power shortages. "A shortage of electricity should never hinder nation-building," he said, citing reforms such as the ‘One Nation, One Grid' policy, and investments in coal, solar, and nuclear energy.
He also spotlighted the PM Suryodaya Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at encouraging rooftop solar installations. "More than 1.25 crore citizens have signed up already, including lakhs from Haryana," he said, adding that the scheme could eliminate household electricity bills and allow consumers to profit from surplus power generation.
Manufacturing, rural reform & welfare
Modi reiterated the Union Budget's announcement of the Mission Manufacturing initiative, designed to empower marginalised youth, expand micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and integrate cutting-edge technology into Indian manufacturing. On the rural front, the PM praised Haryana's farmers for strengthening the country's food security. He noted that the state now procures 24 crops at minimum support prices (MSP), while ₹6,500 crore has been disbursed through PM-Kisan and ₹9,000 crore under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana. He also lauded the Haryana govt for waiving ₹130 crore in farmer dues by scrapping the colonial-era canal water tax.
The Gobar-Dhan Yojana took center stage with the launch of a new biogas plant based on municipal solid waste, which will process 2,600 tonnes every year. According to Modi, the plant will generate clean energy and save the Yamunanagar-Jagadhri municipal corporation ₹3 crore annually.
Support for MSMEs, poor communities
The PM detailed pandemic-era financial relief for MSMEs and cited structural reforms such as a revised MSME definition and special credit card initiatives. He said the Mudra Yojana had distributed ₹33 lakh crore in collateral-free loans, with more than 50% of beneficiaries from scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other backward classes. He contrasted this with opposition-led states such as Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, alleging delays in development and rising living costs. "While some govts stall projects or break promises, our model is one of delivery and development," he said.
Homage to Shankaran Nair
On the occasion of Baisakhi and the 106th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Modi paid homage to the martyrs and lauded freedom fighter Shankaran Nair for his defiance of British oppression, calling it a symbol of resistance and unity. Modi concluded his address by reaffirming his govt's resolve to empower India's foundational pillars — the poor, farmers, youth, and women — and expressed confidence in Haryana's continued growth trajectory.
Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, Union ministers Manohar Lal Khattar, Rao Inderjit Singh, and Krishan Pal Gurjar, state minister Anil Vij, legislators Shyam Singh Rana and Kartikeya Sharma, and Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal were present.
