Pune: A 57-year-old software programme manager lost Rs 37 lakh after cybercrooks lured him to invest in shares via them between March 8 and 11.
The victim lodged a complaint with the Kharadi police on Monday. According to the police, the victim's cellphone number was added to a group on a messaging application platform. The group members discussed the profits by trading shares online and thanked the group admin for his tips.
The police said the victim read these messages and decided to contact the group admin. The group admin sent a link to an application to the victim and asked him to use the application to buy and sell the shares, the police said, adding that the victim started using the application and the group admin shared tips with him. However, the victim did not manage to get the profit as discussed.
The police said, "Following this, the suspects asked him to invest in the high-value shares and promised to help him in buying these high-value shares. The suspects then shared six bank account numbers with him and asked him to transfer money to them."
The victim transferred Rs 37 lakh, police said. "The victim went on transferring money to them and the application showed a good profit. However, when the victim tried to sell the shares, the suspects did not allow him. The victim realised that he was cheated," police said.
