Nashik: Cases of dengue fever have increased by 35% in the city. Since the beginning of this year till April 7, Nashik city reported 94 dengue cases, while during the same corresponding period last year the count was 65, Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) health officials said.
NMC officials said a rise in the use of air coolers and desert coolers this summer might be a reason for the rise in cases. Water tanks in air coolers are major mosquito breeding spots.
"We are holding a meeting of the dengue abatement committee of the municipal corporation, which is chaired by NMC commissioner and includes additional commissioner, head of water supply department of the civic body amd health officials," said an official. The meeting is to be held by the end of this week. "We will discuss measures to prevent dengue cases in the city," said an NMC health official.
Nashik reported only 104 dengue cases between Jan 1 and May 31 in 2024. It witnessed an outbreak next month as 165 dengue cases were reported in June alone.
The cases continued to rise further. In July last year, 435 cases were reported, marking the highest number of cases to be reported in one month in 2024. 198 cases were reported each in Aug and Sept last year.
In all, as many as 1,198 dengue positive cases with one related death were recorded during 2024.
