Maha 1st state in India to cross 50,000 projects under RERA

Nagpur: Maharashtra has become the first and only state in India to cross 50,000-mark in RERA-registered projects, underscoring its dominance in the country’s real estate landscape.Data from ministry of housing and urban affairs reveals that as many as 50,162 projects are currently registered with Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA), accounting for nearly 35% of total 1,44,617 projects approved by all RERA authorities nationwide, according to MahaRERA media advisor Ram Dontonde.Tamil Nadu follows with 27,609 registered projects, and Gujarat ranks third with 15,322. These three states are the only ones in the country with RERA-registered projects in five figures.“MahaRERA was established in 2017 following the enactment of Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016, and recently marked completion of eight years of operations. Maharashtra was among the first states to establish a functional real estate regulator, significantly enhancing transparency, consumer protection, and accountability in the sector,” Dontonde said.
Region-wise data shows Konkan region, which includes Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), leads with 23,770 projects. This is followed by Pune region with 15,932, including 12,788 in Pune district alone. Thane (6,746), Mumbai suburbs (5,907), Raigad (5,360), and Palghar (2,899) also feature prominently.Other regions include North Maharashtra (4,621 projects), Nagpur (2,764), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (1,886), and Amravati (957). Smaller numbers are seen in districts like Gadchiroli (10), Gondia (3), and Hingoli (7), reflecting slower urbanisation in these areas.MahaRERA chairman Manoj Saunik termed this as a landmark in Maharashtra’s real estate evolution. “This is a moment of achievement for the ever-progressing and industry-friendly Maharashtra. The real estate sector has now spread across the state, reflecting growing housing demand and economic development,” he said.Saunik added MahaRERA’s framework has helped ensure minimal grievances from homebuyers. “We aim to empower buyers while maintaining builder accountability. Our grievance redressal system is proactive, resulting in near-negligible complaints,” he noted.
