Celebrated around the world, Mother’s Day is one of the most important, and probably one of the only days dedicated to the mothers in our lives, the women who make everything possible for us, from late-night dinners to early morning school rushes. It is dedicated to the women and mothers who juggle a hundred different tasks just to ensure we have everything we need. And they do this not out of expectations of return, but just out of love and compassion. Mothers' Day is for showing appreciation for their love, sacrifices, and endless care, and saying a genuine and from the heart ‘Thank You’ for all they have done and will continue to do.
When will Mother’s Day be celebrated?
In 2025, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 11, in most countries, and it is always celebrated on the second Sunday of May. So the date for Mother’s Day changes every year based on Sunday.
History of Mother’s Day
Although it might seem like Mother’s Day is a modern celebration, filled with gifts, cards, and the like, it actually goes back decades.
It is said that a woman named Anna Jarvis was the creator of Mother’s Day, and after the death of her mother in 1905, Anna wanted to create a day where people could honour their own mothers and express their gratitude. Her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, had worked tirelessly during the American Civil War to promote better health conditions for mothers and soldiers, and Anna’s vision was to have a day set aside just for mothers.
Her efforts paid off, and in 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day and a holiday.
Why is Mother’s Day important?
Mother’s Day is not just about giving cards or buying gifts, but also a day to show your gratitude to your mother, or a mother figure. Mothers work round the clock, often without rest or thanks, raising children, caring for families, and putting others' needs before their own.
And Mother’s Day becomes a reminder to pause, say ‘thank you’ and make them feel special, even if it’s just for one day.
Mother’s Day is also seen as a form of thanks for the sleepless nights mothers spend to take care of the family, and the endless responsibilities they carry on their shoulders to make sure everyone stays happy and healthy. And while most of their sacrifices go unnoticed, Mother’s Day is treated as the day to treasure them for it all. It brings them to the Spotlight that they really deserve.
And when life gets busy and we lose touch with our parents, mother and father alike, days like these give us time to sit down with them and stay with them, making them feel loved and cared for.
Even if it’s just a phone call or a handwritten note, it shows love and care like nothing else.
Honouring the mothers
Anna Jarvis, the woman behind Mother’s Day, also had a very clear intention and she wanted people to honour their own mothers in a personal and heartfelt way. She believed the day should be about expressing love and respect through simple, genuine gestures, not just commercial gifts or expensive meals.
Ironically, once the day became popular, companies started cashing in. Greeting cards, flower shops, and gift brands turned it into a commercial holiday, and even Anna was deeply upset by this and spent the later part of her life trying to reverse the commercialisation.
But today, thankfully, Mother’s Day is a mix of these two, be it emotion, money, gifts, feelings, and more. Today, people realise that it is the thought and efforts that count, not just the money involved, and a mix of the two looks like an expensive dinner with a heartfelt conversation, or gifting a perfume set and then the mother and children going out together and using the same perfume!
How to celebrate Mother’s Day 2025
The feeling, love, emotion, and respect behind Mother’s Day stays the same, no matter how much the children grow up. Although the gift giving traditions change a bit, the emotions remain the same.
Little children give their mothers cards, flowers, and small gifts, and as they grow up they take them out for special meals or go out together. Children, with the father’s help, give them breakfast in bed, buy flowers, or go out on picnics.
And even if you cannot go out, nothing can beat a celebration at home with a beautiful card, some food, dance, singing, genuine love for her, and more.
And this Mother’s Day, if you spend the day with your mom, there are actually some simple things you can do together. Sit down with her, talk and listen to her, ask her about the recent gossip, what is happening in her Kitty groups, what new hobbies she has acquired, and the likes.
Once the conversation is done, make some food for her, something as simple as Daal chawal, or as time-consuming as Arrabiata pasta, pour your heart, love, and skill into it.
If you are going to be away from your mom on Mother’s Day, write her a simple letter (but emotional and from the heart) and attach some pictures of the two of you together. And with the letter, send in some pictures of you both, or family pictures, or even write something nice and beautiful for her.
