MANGALURU: A protest will be staged by the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DCC) in Mangaluru on April 26, condemning the rise in prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, DCC President Harish Kumar said that AICC Secretary and MLA of Angamaly, Roji M John, and minister for health and family welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, will participate in the protest. A rally will commence from Ambedkar Circle at 10 am, and a protest meet has been scheduled near Mini Vidhan Soudha in the city.
He said that the central govt continued to hike prices of petroleum products despite a drastic reduction in the price of crude oil in the international market. “The price of petrol is more than Rs 100 even when the crude oil is priced at 66 dollars per barrel. Instead of reducing the price of LPG, the govt has increased the rate by Rs 50 per cylinder. The central govt is snatching the financial aid that the Congress govt in Karnataka gives to people through guarantee schemes. People are forced to shell out more money when the prices of commodities are skyrocketing. A decrease in the prices of petroleum products will automatically solve the price rise crisis,” he said.
Reacting to BJP’s criticisms that the Congress govt made the state bankrupt through guarantee schemes, Kumar said that the govt under Siddaramaiah has presented a pro-people budget by allocating funds for development works without discontinuing guarantee schemes. “The Congress has implemented guarantee schemes as promised in its manifesto in all states that it rules. BJP workers have started slamming their own party for the rise in prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG,” he said.
On the caste census, he asserted that it would help backward classes. “Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has already clarified that no community will be subjected to injustice through the caste census and all shortcomings will be rectified,” Kumar said.
He accused the BJP workers of damaging the banners and posters the Congress workers put up during Shivakumar’s visit to Belthanady on Sunday.
