Kolkata: IIT-Kharagpur authorities have taken a proactive approach towards students' well-being by reaching out to them through innovative means. They have put up QR codes on doors of every hostel room with messages like "Let's talk! Scan to connect," and "Every problem has a solution. Let's find it together". The initiative is aimed at making it easier for students to access resources, helpline numbers, support systems, and other services..
The death of Aniket Walkar, a fourth-year ocean engineering and naval architecture student, marked the second death this semester and the third in the last 10 months. It was also the eighth student death in five years at the institute. Dean of student affairs Bhargab Maitra explained that the QR codes will allow students to access a range of support systems even at odd hours, which is crucial when they are not feeling well physically or mentally.
Maitra highlighted that students often feel hesitant to ask others about helpline numbers or how to access counselling and support services, especially for mental health issues. This initiative will maintain their privacy while enabling them to access online facilities and information. It is part of a proactive engagement strategy where authorities are reaching out and trying to stay connected with students.
Walkar's death led to an emergency students' senate meeting on Monday evening. The meeting, which took place from 8.30 pm to 10 pm, saw student senate members expressing concern about the repeated deaths on campus, indicating systemic issues that need addressing. Although mechanisms exist to identify severe mental health cases, and individuals are seeking help, lives are still being lost.
Another student emphasised the importance of increasing interactions and engagements in the halls of residences to foster a sense of community among students. Regular hall activities in the presence of wardens could strengthen bonds beyond classrooms and prevent untoward incidents.
The Technology Students' Gymkhana has sent an email to all hostel general secretaries (student welfare) to compile a list of mental health cases needing support. This information is crucial for improving mental health support systems and ensuring better intervention. However, a student pointed out that it is challenging for floor representatives or general secretaries to gather information about mental health cases due to confidentiality and privacy policies. Only severe cases are reported to wardens.
