Reena Raphael, a 58-year-old, realized her lifelong ambition by pursuing a postgraduate degree at Maharaja's College after retiring as a Panchayat secretary. Overcoming initial hurdles in subject choice, she embraced Philosophy and found inspiration in the academic environment.
KOCHI: For 58-year-old Reena Raphael, a lifelong dream is close to being fulfilled as she awaits the results of her postgraduate course at Maharaja's College—a journey she began soon after retiring from govt service. A Thykoodam native, Reena retired in 2023 after serving as secretary of the Chendamangalam Panchayat. But instead of embracing a quiet retirement, she chose to return to academics—something she had always longed for. "It started with a casual enquiry about eligibility. Once I found out there was no age limit for PG courses, I applied immediately," she said. Since her youth, Reena had admired Maharaja's College and dreamed of studying there. "It's one of the most prestigious institutions in the state. I had hoped to join the Political Science department, but as seats were reserved for those with a relevant undergraduate background, I chose Philosophy, which was my second option," she said.Decades ago, Raphael completed her graduation in Mathematics from St Teresa's College before building a long career in public service. Back in the classroom, the age gap has never been an obstacle. "Some students mistake me for a teacher and greet me respectfully.
During exams, they even think I'm the invigilator," she laughed."Her decision is inspiring," said Biju K, a Philosophy department faculty member. "We hope her journey motivates more individuals to pursue education, regardless of their age." Regardless of the exam results, Raphael remains undeterred. "The road ahead may be challenging, but I'm hopeful. I want to eventually work toward a PhD," she said.
