Hyderabad: City police commissioner CV Anand on Tuesday lauded the efforts of SHE Teams and the Bharosa Centres in upholding women's safety in the state. He was speaking at the She Triumphs through Respect, Equality, and Empowerment (STREE) Summit organised by the Hyderabad City Security Council (HCSC) in Banjara Hills. Deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who was the chief guest for the event, stated that the Telangana govt aims to make one crore women from the state crorepatis.
Addressing the event, the CP lauded the state govt's free bus travel scheme for women. He attributed the huge footfall of women at festive gatherings and public events to the govt initiative. The Deputy CM said that the initiative has given mobility and freedom to women. "Our SHE Teams are popular across the country, and they aid in keeping Hyderabad as the safest city. During the recently concluded Numaish, SHE Teams nabbed 10 to 15 eve-teasers every day," the CP said.
He also explained the impact of the Bharosa Centre on women's safety. "We have counselling for the victims, legal and medical aid, and also the court operating under the same roof in the Bharosa Centre. Through Bharosa Centres, we got 36 convictions in POCSO cases, and 12 of them are life convictions," Anand further said.
Three days ago, a man who subjected his daughter to abuse and rape for six years was sentenced to life imprisonment, and the victim was awarded Rs 5 lakh compensation. The incident came to light after the girl's mother, who went to Saudi for employment, returned to the city and noticed that her daughter was traumatised. The girl confided in her mother, and the good work by Bharosa Centre staff ensured that the offender received stringent punishment, the commissioner said.
The Hyderabad commissionerate now has one women's police station in each of the seven law and order zones, and eight of the 19 DCPs in the city are women. "Women constables are now part of the Blue Colts night patrolling teams. We have three women law and order SHOs. If women are empowered, GDP increases, and the state as well as the country prospers. It is nothing but common sense, and Hyderabad is showing the way forward," Anand said.
Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said that the govt's target was to provide Rs 20,000 crore in interest-free loans per annum to women through Self Help Groups (SHGs), and they surpassed the target by providing Rs 21,000 crore.
"We also created a market for the women SHGs. For example, we have encouraged women to start 1MW solar power generation and also made an MoU to buy back that power. Once they become successful, we want to expand from 1,000MW. Telangana is fully committed to the empowerment of women. Our target is to make 1 crore women in this state crorepatis," the Deputy CM said.
