Berhampur: A 53-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly cheating people by taking loans using fake gold ornaments in Bhanjanagar area of Ganjam district. The accused was identified as Tamal Nayak of Samapalli village near Bhanjanagar. At least five fake gold ornaments were seized from her, said IIC, Bhanjanagar police station, Jeevananada Jena.
Preliminary probe reveals she cheated five people of Rs 75,000 by giving them fake gold ornaments in the last six months, police said. Police said the woman went to different houses in various villages with fake gold ornaments. She impressed people by presenting the gold ornaments as genuine and told them that she required money urgently for the treatment of her son and husband.
Her fraud came to light when one Kalia Sethi of Dubuduba village, one of the victims, lodged an FIR on Saturday at Bhanjanagar police station. He stated that after examining the ornament with a jeweller, he found it to be fake, said police.
