Kalaburagi/Belagavi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Wednesday criticised the BJP-led central govt over the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filing a chargesheet against senior party functionaries Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the
National Herald case, accusing the govt of "unnecessarily troubling" the opposition.
"There is nothing in the case... It was shut down for some time due to financial issues," Kharge said in Kalaburagi. "Sonia Gandhi tried to revive it with loans and donations. Now, they say that it is wrong to take a loan... BJP is working against the law. What is wrong is wrong, and we will prove it. We will protest nationwide and tell people that we are being troubled unnecessarily."
Asked about ED questioning Robert Vadra in the Gurugram land deal case, Kharge said, "It is his personal matter. The party has no say in it."
Chief minister Siddaramaiah also lashed out at ED's move, saying in a statement: "ED filing a chargesheet against Gandhis — who have always posed a formidable challenge to the Union govt — is yet another chapter in the vindictive politics of PM Modi and Shah. This is not merely an act of retribution against two leaders but a clear warning by the Modi govt to opposition parties and all citizens who believe in democracy that dissent will not be tolerated."
Echoing similar sentiments, deputy CM and Congress state president DK Shivakumar, saying: "The Gandhis haven't benefited from National Herald in any way. It is a property of Congress party. Their names were mentioned in the chargesheet since they head the party. This is nothing but political vendetta."
The opposition BJP hit back, saying Congress functionaries must face the consequences of their actions. BJP state president BY Vijayendra in Belagavi said: "ED is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the case in which Sonia Gandhi is the first accused and Rahul Gandhi is the second. No one is above the law, and they will have to deal with it."
