COIMBATORE: A goldsmith and his wife died by suicide in Coimbatore on Thursday by consuming cyanide as they were unable to repay the money they had borrowed, police said.
The deceased have been identified as M Thirumurugan, 47, of Amul Nagar Second Street at Indira Nagar in Selvapuram and his wife T Pradeepa Ramani, 40. Thirumurugan ran a goldsmith business on the first floor of their house.He faced huge losses in the business and decided to end his life.
He sent their daughter, T Janani, 17, who secured good marks in Class XII exam the result of which was released on Thursday morning, to his sister-in-law S Jaya Priya’s residence at Pachapalayam in the afternoon. Later, the couple consumed cyanide mixed with water and died on the spot.
Janani tried to contact her parents from 5.30pm to 7.30pm but did not get any response. She conveyed the message to her aunt, who rushed to the house and found the couple dead. Locals alerted the Selvapuram police, who sent the bodies to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
The Selvapuram police registered a case. Further investigations were on.
