Short lives in the animal world

There are millions of animals and species in the world, and we have some of the longest and shortest living animals on the planet. From animals who are practically immortal, to ones that don’t survive over 100 days, there is something unique about them all.

Mayflies

Mayflies are known as one of the shortest-living insects in the world, and most adult mayflies live for less than 24 hours. Their only purpose in adult life is to mate and reproduce, and they die after laying eggs in their adult life.

Gastrotrichs

Gastrotrichs are basically tiny, worm-like animals found in freshwater sources. They are microscopic to see, and only live for about 3-8 days.

Flour moth

Evident in the name, Flour moths are small animals that are found in grains, flour, and other cereal-based products. They only live for about 14-30 days in their adult life.

Luna moth

One of the most beautiful green moths is the Luna, and when it is perfectly still, it creates the perfect camouflage to look like a green leaf. But sadly, they too live for only about a week after they mate and lay eggs.

Fruit flies

The small flies that bother people when around their fruits are the fruit flies. These attracted to rotting fruits, and only live for about 50-70 days at max.

Male drone ants

Male drone ants have one simple job and that is to mate with a queen ant. Once they do, they die shortly afterward, often within a week or two.

Male Tsetse flies

Another animal that dies within a month or two are the male Tsetse flies. While female tsetse flies live longer, male tsetse flies live only about 2 to 4 weeks, and just mate and then die soon after.

Pygmy goby

Another water animal that does not live for long is the Pygmy goby. They are recorded to live for only about 59 days.
