Nashik: Rural police arrested two men in connection with the murder of 52-year-old Prabhakar Ghote, whose saffron-clad body was found in Trimbakeshwar on Monday.
Police said Ghote was found dead near an arch of the Sri Swami Samartha centre in Trimbakeshwar. Initially, police registered a case of accidental death. However, during the investigation, they checked CCTV footage of the area and noticed that on Sunday, between 8.30pm and 9pm, two unidentified men had quarrelled with Ghote and had beaten him up. Ghote subsequently fell and died.
Based on the footage, the Trimbakeshwar police registered a case of murder against two unidentified people. Later, police received a tip from an informant about the two accused men being spotted. Police tracked down the two men, identified as Walu Kasbe and Ajay Dattu Game.
When asked about the murder, the suspects admitted they had killed a person clad in saffron robes. They said Ghote had started abusing them and tried to beat them up. The men said Ghote's actions made them angry, and then they too punched him, which led to his death. They then fled the spot.
SP Vikram Deshmane and additional SP Aditya Mirkhelkar visited the spot and directed police officers to investigate the case. Police said the two suspects were arrested within 12 hours of the FIR being registered.
