Nagpur: Over a month after the post fell vacant, senior physics professor Subhash Kondawar was appointed as new acting pro vice chancellor of Nagpur University on Monday. The tenure of all four deans has also been extended by a couple of months, officials said.
Acting vice chancellor Madhavi Khode-Chaware handed over charge to Kondawar during a brief ceremony at the main building. The post was vacant since March 12 after the governor replaced Gondawana VC Prashant Bokare, who was holding charge of NU. Pharmaceutical sciences professor Rajendra Kakde's term ended with Bokare's departure. However, there was confusion over the continuation of NU deans as they held charge even after the death of former VC Subhash Chaudhari.
Speaking to TOI, Kondawar said that the tenures of faculty deans, whose terms are co-terminus with that of the VC and were set to expire on April 30, have been extended by at least a couple of months. This extension ensures continuity in academic and administrative functions during the ongoing transition. TOI had, on April 8, highlighted the problems in store if the posts of dean were empty, especially with exam season looming.
Kondawar also clarified that the process of appointing a new vice chancellor is under the jurisdiction of the governor's office. While the university awaits the official advertisement for the position, there has been no notable progress in that direction so far.
Kondawar, who previously also held charge of the statistics department, was congratulated by the deans and other university staff.
