II PU remedial classes have no takers due to part-time job in Dakshina Kannada

II PU remedial classes have no takers due to part-time job in Dakshina Kannada
Mangaluru: To help those candidates who could not clear the II PU first exam, the department of pre-university education started Paryaya Bhodane, or remedial classes, for candidates from govt colleges. However, the classes, which started on April 11 across coastal districts, have had no takers.
The reason is that many students joined part-time jobs, and others are uninterested in attending them and have asked for time. Though the number of students from govt PU colleges who were not able to pass the exam on the first attempt is not yet out, it is estimated that in each govt PU college, there are at least 10-12 students failing in total in Dakshina Kannada.
"The Paryaya Bhodane classes started days after the II PU results were announced. It is a good initiative from the state govt, but the time is not convenient for students. Most of the students who failed to clear on the first attempt are average or below-average students in academics. There are a few who could not clear due to health or other reasons. Since the govt started classes soon after the exam results, many are not mentally prepared to attend them. A lot of candidates from rural areas have joined part-time work to support their families. As a result, they are not keen to return to classrooms to attend remedial classes," an official from the department of pre-university told TOI.
A lecturer said that remedial classes would have a good response if they started after May 15. Currently, the students are working in various sectors as part-timers; in rural areas, they have joined small industries, peeling areca nut and others. "If they leave this work, they will lose out on income, which is crucial to continue their studies. Secondly, since classes are held soon after the exam results are out, the candidates need some breather from academics," the lecturer said, adding some candidates from other districts went home.
The II PU exam-2 will commence on April 24 across the state and end on May 8.
