Health department conducts surprise check at Lakkar Bazar

Ludhiana: Acting on a tip-off, the district health department, on Thursday, conducted a surprise inspection at Lakkar Bazar and stopped a vehicle transporting dairy products from another district. The health department said that the vehicle was found to be carrying items such as paneer, curd, and desi ghee. Preliminary checks indicated the absence of complete documentation and quality verification.
The operation was conducted on the directions of Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh and was led by civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur, with the support of district health officer (DHO) Dr Amarjit Kaur and the food safety team. The health department added that during the inspection, the health team collected five samples for laboratory testing—one sample of desi ghee, two of paneer, and two of curd.
Civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur said that the samples were sent to the state food laboratory for analysis and appropriate action would be taken based on the results as per the Food Safety and Standards Act. She emphasised the department's ongoing commitment to ensuring public health through routine monitoring and enforcement.
District health officer (DHO) Dr Amarjit Kaur highlighted the need for all food business operators to comply with FSSAI guidelines, including holding valid licences, following hygienic practices, and ensuring proper labelling and documentation. She encouraged food handlers and sellers to adopt best practices in the interest of public safety and consumer trust.
The health department also urged people to remain vigilant by purchasing food items—especially perishable dairy products—only from FSSAI-licensed vendors. It added that consumers are advised to check packaging, labelling, and hygiene standards, and to report any irregularities to the nearest health office. "The administration remains committed to ensuring the supply of safe, high-quality food to the residents of the district," the department said.
Meanwhile, the complainant, Kuldeep Singh, said that his team carried out reconnaissance four to five times before calling the administration.
