Ponda underpass misses date of commissioning

Ponda underpass misses date of commissioning
Ponda: Despite the RCC (reinforced cement concrete) structure being ready, the vehicle underpass near the Ponda KTC bus stand has missed its date of commissioning due to the shifting of the natural gas pipelines that pass through the underpass.
However, the contractor has begun construction of the retaining walls on the side of the underpass.
An official of the national highway division of the public works department (PWD) said that they have written to the Goa Natural Gas Private Limited to shift its pipeline that carries piped natural gas used by households for cooking.
The PWD official said they cannot complete the digging for the underpass unless the gas pipeline is shifted.
Meanwhile, an official from the gas company said that the pipeline cannot be shifted, though it could be kept hanging with support till the underpass work is completed.
The completion of the underpass is important as the widening of the national highway stretch between Shapur and Bhoma will be taken up only after the underpass is ready.
The underpass contractor has already started digging, but workers have to protect a 4-metre-wide part of a hillock to prevent any damage to the gas pipeline.
The Union ministry of road transport and highways had sanctioned Rs 116 crore for the work in Feb last year. Following this, a tender worth Rs 97 crore for the works, including the underpass, construction of an approach road to the newly constructed Khandepar bridge, completion of pending works of four lane road at Angadi-Khandepar, and other works was floated in March last year.
