Kerala CM inaugurates first phase of comprehensive beach project in Kannur
Kozhikode: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the first phase of the Muzhappilangad-Dharmadam comprehensive beach tourism project in Kannur district, which aims at revamping arguably the longest drive-in beach in the country.
Inaugurating the development works, the chief minister said that the Muzhappilangad beach tourism project marks a milestone in the tourism development of Kerala.
Vijayan said that the state is witnessing a significant surge in tourism and added that the beach, with its unique features, has the capacity to attract both domestic and international tourists. Along with this, Dharmadam beach and Dharmadam island are also included in the development plans. The government is taking steps to ensure comprehensive development of all these destinations, the CM said.
A total of Rs 233 crore has been earmarked for the comprehensive beach development project. The plan is being implemented in four phases: north Muzhappilangad beach, south Muzhappilangad beach, Dharmadam beach, and Dharmadam island. The first phase has been completed with development works worth Rs 62 crore.
Facilities such as a walkway, refreshment centres, and vehicle parking have been arranged in the northern part of Muzhappilangad beach as part of the project. The southern part will feature seating areas, toilets, kiosks, and parking.
At Dharmadam beach, floating docks, a musical fountain, jogging and cycling tracks will be developed. A nature hub is being planned at Dharmadam island, which is a stopover for migratory birds. An underwater sculpture garden and elevated nature walk are also part of the plan.
Tourism and public works minister PA Mohammed Riyas, who presided over the function, said that the Muzhappilangad-Dharmadam beach tourism will rejuvenate the region's economy and cultural landscape.
