KHARGONE: A 45-year-old man killed his wife and buried her in his house at Sulgaon village in Barwaha of Khargone district. He kept sleeping over the grave for three days and in fear that the incident would be discovered, he also died by suicide.
The murder came to light after the man died by suicide and police searched his house. Khargone superintendent of police Dharmraj Meena told TOI that the accused, Laxman had married 40-year-old Rukmani, six years ago. It was Laxman's fourth marriage and Rukmani's third. They worked together as labourers. Their children lived with their former spouses and Laxman had no kid with Rukmani.
Laxman and Rukmani both were addicted to alcohol and frequently quarrelled. On Friday, Laxman came out of his house and told neighbours that he consumed pesticide. By the time the villagers informed the police, he died. A police team reached the spot and when it went inside the house a foul smell was emanating from inside.
Smelling something fishy, the team launched a search only to stumble upon Rukmani's murder. The police found a woman's hand and foot on the ground under Laxman's bed. The place was immediately dug up, and his wife, Rukmani's three to four days old decomposed body was found there. Both bodies were sent for autopsy.
Though the postmortem report has not been received, it is almost clear that Laxman killed Rukmani by strangling her. After a dispute over some matter, Laxman killed Rukmani and buried her in a room of the house. Whenever he went out, he locked the door, the SP said.
After three to four days, due to the foul smell, people of the locality enquired about his wife. But he informed them that she had gone to her relatives' house.
The SP said that it appeared that Laxman allegedly ended his life by drinking pesticide as he feared that the murder would be revealed. He dug up a pit and buried his wife, but her hand and foot were on the ground since the body was not buried properly, resulting in a foul smell.
