Kolkata: Film and TV director Siddhanta Das (35), who was arrested for killing one and injuring nine at Thakurpukur Bazar on April 6, will face a test identification (TI) parade. Cops said at least a couple of the injured were asked to identify Das as the SUV driver on that day.
"Since there were two others inside the car on that day, we want to put in evidence that it was Das who was at the wheel," said an officer.
Das was produced at the local Alipore Court on Wednesday and was sent to 14 days' judicial custody. Alipore police court public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal claimed that Das was not cooperating with investigators during police custody interrogation and had tried to hide the identity of his co-passengers. Das also reportedly dodged questions on if someone asked him to drive faster.
According to investigations so far, Das drove after consuming liquor almost three times the prescribed limit, cops claimed in court on Monday. A test confirmed he consumed 80 mg/100 ml of alcohol while the permitted limit is less than 30 mg/100 ml.
According to police, Das claimed he was very familiar with the road through Thakurpukur market and often drove through it late at night, sometimes at 2 am or 3 am. However, at such late hours, Thakurpukur market is not crowded, with all the shops closed and the road empty. Therefore, he used that market road as a shortcut. At those times, he drove through the market at 60 kmph-80 kmph but faced no issue.
The deceased, Aminur Rahman (61), had succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to a private hospital. He was an employee of KMC and is survived by his wife and two sons. His elder son, Asimur, is an art teacher who also delivers food online in his spare time.
On April 6, Rahman went to Thakurpukur market to order sweets for Asimur's wedding, which had been scheduled for last Tuesday. It has now been pushed back. Aminur's nephew Atiur said, "The family is devastated. How can the wedding happen now?"
