Rain triggers waterlogging woes in Dibrugarh
Dibrugarh: A few hours of overnight rainfall triggered widespread waterlogging across several key areas in Dibrugarh on Wednesday morning, raising concerns among residents about the city's preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season.
Key arterial roads, including stretches of Mancotta Road near the Dibrugarh Police Reserve, SP's residence and inspector of schools office, were submerged under knee-deep water. Similarly, Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya Road too was flooded, disrupting daily commutes and causing significant inconvenience to residents, students and office-goers.
Mayor Saikat Patra, accompanied by deputy mayor Ujjal Phukon and Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) executive officer Navas Das, conducted on-site inspections of the affected areas.
"We are taking swift measures to address the waterlogging issue. Emergency teams have been deployed zone-wise to clear blocked drains and pump out water from the worst-affected areas. We're implementing both short-term emergency measures and working on a comprehensive long-term solution to prevent waterlogging," Patra said.
"Unseasonal rains caught us off guard, but we are working round-the-clock to ensure minimal disruption. Citizens have been urged to cooperate and avoid dumping waste in drains," Phukon said.
"If just a few hours of rain in April can flood the roads like this, what will happen in June when the monsoon hits? The drainage system is clearly inadequate and authorities need to act before the situation worsens," Sunny Bora, a college student, said.
