Prolonged neglect led to insurgency in NE: Parnaik
Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh governor K T Parnaik has emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to addressing security challenges in the Northeast region.
Speaking at a seminar titled, ‘Towards a Military History of Northeast India' organised by the department of history at Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) near here, Parnaik highlighted the importance of winning trust, minimising casualties and strictly adhering to human rights by the security forces while conducting their duties for national, regional and state security.
The governor also emphasized the significance of the seminar in understanding the evolution of the Northeast region, particularly in the post-independence era. He highlighted how the approach of the British and the armed forces towards the region differed from their strategies in the rest of the country.
He noted that prolonged neglect had contributed to the rise of insurgency in the region.
The governor, who is the chief rector of the RGU, commended the vice-chancellor and his team for organising the seminar, saying it will help in taking proactive steps to strengthen military strategy and national security.
Encouraging academic engagement, Parnaik appealed to the research scholars to pursue doctoral studies in military history.
Fresh perspectives and innovative ideas from young researchers could contribute valuable insights to national security and integration, he said.
North Eastern Hill University professor Imdad Hussan (retd), RGU vice-chancellor S K Nayak, seminar coordinator Sarah Hilaly and others also shared their insights at the event.
A total of 13 research papers were presented during the seminar.
