GUWAHATI: A 60-year-old man was arrested in Assam's Chirang district after allegedly beheading his wife during an argument in front of their daughters. Following the act, he carried her severed head to the Ballamguri Police patrolling point, police said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Britesh Hajong, killed his wife, Baijayanti Hajong (50), at their home in the North Ballamguri area of Chirang's Bijni on Saturday evening, said a top police officer. The officer said the accused is in custody and under interrogation, though the motive behind the act remains unclear.
The body has been sent for postmortem, and the investigating officer, while talking to the media, said, "We are investigating the matter, and the statements of the two eyewitnesses will be recorded."
However, family members revealed that Britesh would often torture his wife, and the couple were in an argument over something for the last couple of days. "The argument resulted in the incident after Britesh, out of anger, suddenly took a machete and beheaded his wife," a relative claimed.
A case has been registered under Section 103 (murder) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have recovered the murder weapon and sent it for forensic examination.
