Chandigarh: A man coming to the city for an interview was shot at during a scuffle with the occupant of another car over the right of way near the Chandigarh-Zirakpur barrier. Both were injured in the incident, and are in GMCH-32 at present.
The incident took place around 11pm Friday.
Dinesh from Haryana's Fatehabad district was to give an interview for the job of a personal security officer of a Haryana BJP leader, and was driving to Chandigarh for that.
Police said Dinesh, who was in a Santro with a friend, had an altercation with Raj Kumar, who was driving a Maruti Gypsy, over the right of way when the former reached Zirakpur. Dinesh did not stop his car and entered Chandigarh. However, Raj kept following him. At one point, Dinesh was forced to stop his car due to traffic. Raj and others quickly caught up with him. A scuffle ensued with both groups hurling stones at each other, followed by a physical assault using sticks and rods. The windscreens of both vehicles got damaged, police added.
In the meantime, police said Raj allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired two shots at Dinesh, with one bullet hitting him in the stomach. Raj also received injuries in the assault. After hearing the sound of gunshots, CRPF personnel posted at the Zirakpur-Chandigarh barrier alerted the UT Police. On receiving information, Jawinder Singh, DSP (south division), DSP (crime branch) Rajeev Kumar, SHO of Sector 31 PS, along with their forces, reached the spot. They rushed both Dinesh and Raj to GMCH-32. Two bullet shells and a .32 bore pistol were seized from the accused, Raj.
Sector 31 police have lodged a case of attempt to murder against Raj, a resident of Zirakpur's VIP Road, and others.
Complainant Dinesh, in his statement to police, said he had gone to VIP Road Zirakpur along with two friends, Vikram and Sandeep. Vikram went out to meet someone, while he and Sandeep sat in the car. It is then that a delivery boy came to them. The road was quite narrow, so the delivery boy started arguing with him to leave the road. The delivery boy also called his friends who were on four-five motorcycles. A white gypsy also came along, and one of its occupants took out a weapon and threatened him. Out of fear, Dinesh drove his car away from there and all of them started following their car. As soon as Dinesh crossed Zirakpur and entered Chandigarh, the occupants in the gypsy and the motorcycle came there. They parked their jeep and motorcycle in front of his car and broke the rear glass of his car. They then got into a scuffle with him and his friend Sandeep.
Rajeev Kumar, SHO, Sector 31 police station, said, "An FIR under relevant sections of BNS and the Arms Act has been registered against Raj and others."
Police are also verifying whether Raj, who works as a financier in Haryana's Sirsa district, had a valid licence for carrying a weapon or if he was carrying it illegally.
