CHANDIGARH: The fresh order for extending the detention of Waris Punjab De (WPD) chief
Amritpal Singh under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) by another year includes his "audio recordings" and other material amounting to nearly 4,000 pages, sources privy to the developments said.
On Wednesday, when the current detention of Amritpal — Lok Sabha MP from Khadoor Sahib lodged in Dibrugarh jail since April 2023 — ends, he will be given a fresh detention order. According to sources, this order is voluminous and includes annexures. He will also receive a pen drive, which sources say includes audio recordings linking him to alleged criminal activities, including his alleged involvement in the murder of YouTuber Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau at Faridkot on Oct 9, 2024.
A senior Punjab Police officer said that it was "established beyond doubt that Amritpal had direct connections with Canada-based designated terrorist Arsh Dala, who orchestrated the murder at Amritpal's behest." Once an associate of Amritpal when they were in Dubai, the YouTuber, Punjab Police believe, was murdered because he "knew the secrets of Amritpal" and could "expose" him. Police named Amritpal as an accused in the case, in which the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was also invoked.
A laptop will be provided to the jail superintendent to be further allow Amritpal to access the contents of the pen drive.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, during a press conference in Chandigarh on Monday, had also released a few purported audio recordings of Amritpal. In one of these, the man claimed by Majithia to be Amritpal is purportedly heard talking about his links with slain gangster Jaipal Bhullar and about dacoities committed by the latter and the loot. Jaipal was killed in an encounter in Kolkata in June 2021. In another purported audio recording, which the Akali leader also put out on X, the man he says is Amritpal claims to have a 'Glock worth Rs 4.5 lakh, which he made to be kept somewhere."
Majithia addressed the press conference to seek the arrest of those allegedly plotting the assassination of political leaders, including him (Majithia), Union minister of state Ravneet Singh Bittu, and home minister Amit Shah, in purported chats of a group leaked after reports of the extension in Amritpal's detention under the NSA for another year. Punjab Police later announced the arrest of two of the three people it named in the FIR registered in the matter.
