New Delhi: Delhi BJP is set to launch an awareness campaign across the capital to promote the idea of ‘One Nation, One Election', party president Virendra Sachdeva announced on Sunday.
Speaking after a meeting at the Delhi BJP office, Sachdeva called simultaneous elections a "national necessity", arguing that they would streamline governance and accelerate development. "One Nation, One Election is not just an idea, it is the need of the hour. Repeated elections consume the nation's time, money, and manpower. This cycle must be broken if we want to build a developed India," he said.
He highlighted how India is often in a near-constant election cycle, with Lok Sabha and state polls overlapping every five years and various bypolls and local body elections occurring in between. "During the last Lok Sabha elections, around one crore personnel were deployed. Frequent imposition of the Model Code of Conduct halts development projects again and again," he added.
To address public concerns and mobilise support, the Delhi BJP will launch a citywide awareness drive. "We will take this message to every household in Delhi. People need to understand how much more efficient our democracy can become if we align the electoral calendars," said Sachdeva.
The announcement comes on the same day the ‘One Nation, One Election' Bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha, triggering protests from the opposition. The Union Cabinet recently cleared the proposal, which aims to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies such as panchayats and municipalities.
The bill is based on recommendations from a high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, which submitted its report in Sept 2024. The panel endorsed the move, citing benefits such as reduced election expenditure, smoother governance, and greater voter participation.
