Intolerance is a negative approach or action where one person or a group does not accept others' point of view or belief, rather disregards it for being different. This could be on ritualistic or religious grounds or could be in conflict with our own beliefs and its consequence may produce harmful effects on the country and society.
As per a report by the Pew Research Centre, India ranks as the worst country when it comes to religious freedom. The report is based on two indices—the Government Restriction Index (GRI), measuring government restriction on free practice of religion, and the Social Hostilities Index (SHI) that looks at hostilities around the issue of religion. Sadly, India fares poorly on both counts but the score is abysmal in case of the SHI index.
While India has always been a diverse country in terms of culture and religion, since last 2-3 years India has been growing in terms intolerance.
Two major incidents that gave rise to intolerance in India are:
First, a Kannada scholar M. M. Kalburgi was gunned down by a visitor to his residence. Kalburgi was a well-known critic of idol-worshipping, a practice adopted by most Hindus. Kalburgi's death followed the murder of a Communist leader in February in 2013.
The second trend is that of an increasingly violence against Indians who consume beef. In September 2016, a Muslim man was beaten to death by his Hindu neighbors. The reason was because a carcass of a cow was seen nearby.
