When the ceremonies of the nine-day festival Durga Puja end on the Vijaya Dashmi, an intricately made and beautifully adorned idol of Goddess Durga is immersed into the river. This is believed to be the day when the Goddess departs to Kailash, her heavenly abode, and bids adieu to her people. Visarjan is done by first smearing of the vermillion followed by the idol immersion.

Durga Visarjan is done at the most sacred time, which is during Aparahna while Dashami Tithi is prevailing. Devotees break their nine days Navratri fast after the visarjan.

People flock the Durga Pandals with sweets and vermilion to bid farewell to the Goddess and her four children Ganesha, Karthik, Laxmi and Saraswati who are also worshiped amidst vibrancy and festivities. After the immersion people play drums and trumpets on the banks of the river.

Bengali women dressed in traditional Korial sarees gather in crowds to smear vermilion on the feet of the Goddess and then apply it on each other’s forehead or faces also known as Sindoor Khela. This is done in order to wish longevity of each other’s’ husband's life and prosperity to the family.
