Indian athlete Anju Bobby George, created history when she won the bronze medal in Long Jump during the 2003 World Championships in Paris. She turned out to be the first Indian athlete ever to have won a medal in a World Championships in Athletics jumping 6.70 meter.

She was felicitated with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2002–2003 for being an eminent sports person from the government of India and the following year she was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna as well. In 2004, she was conferred with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award. Moreover, Anju was ranked 28th in February 2007 among the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
