Man jumps off building to evade cops

Vijayawada: A man attempted suicide by jumping off a three-storey building at Ajit Singh Nagar on Saturday. The survivor, identified as Rayudu Durga Rao (40), from Mandapeta, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to police, three policemen from Ajith Nagar police station, reportedly in plainclothes, visited Durga Rao's rented house to question him in connection with a theft case. The men introduced themselves to Durga Rao's wife and the landlord as police officers.
Suspecting something was amiss, Durga Rao's wife reportedly asked the visitors to produce their ID cards. However, before they could clarify, a panicked Durga Rao ran to the third floor of the building and leapt off.
Police sources said that Durga Rao was earlier involved in 15 cases of theft. An investigation is underway.
