Mobile toilets to come up at Trichy GH
Trichy: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) is set to install 10 mobile toilets on its premises in a phased manner.
In the first phase, two mobile toilets will be placed on either side of the old MGMGH building, one near the district early intervention centre (DIEC) block, and one near a small park close by. The mobile toilet units have already arrived, officials said and added that they would become operational by the end of this month.
The two-storey old building and the DIEC block are presently for providing outpatient care. Around 250 patients visit these two buildings daily. There is only one toilet block with four loos each for men and women located behind the old building, which many visitors found inadequate.
While patients and their families have welcomed the move, they are sceptical as to the long-term upkeep of the units. "We really need more toilets here, especially with so many people coming in every day," said M Rani, an outpatient. "This is definitely a good step, but they have to maintain the toilets properly and keep them clean," she added.
TOI reported earlier that certain areas within the hospital such as the maternity ward continue to face a shortage of toilet facilities for attenders, forcing them to relieve in the open.
"We will start with these four units for now. Based on the feedback and further assessment of needs, we will decide where to place the remaining units or whether additional ones are required in the next phases," said a senior hospital official.
