Autorickshaws allowed access to Trichy airport arrival area
Trichy: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has allowed autorickshaws to access the new integrated terminal at Trichy International Airport to drop off and pick up passengers.
Under the revised arrangement, autorickshaws can enter the arrival area and stop at a designated drop-off point about 100 metres from the terminal. Passengers can then use lifts to reach the departure lounge on the first level. The airport management has allotted a 30-minute window for autorickshaws to enter and exit the premises.
Earlier, three-wheelers were halted near the parking fee gate, nearly 800 metres from the terminal, forcing passengers to walk with their luggage. "This move ensures an affordable and convenient option for travellers and their families," said Trichy MP Durai Vaiko, who was thanked by a group of autorickshaw drivers at the airport on Saturday.
However, autorickshaws remain barred from the ramps connecting the departure lounge. They may only operate near the arrival area. An entry fee of Rs40 will be charged per trip, to be borne by passengers.
"We'll deploy drivers at the drop-off point to avoid congestion and ensure smooth flow," said T Chandrasekar, deputy president of the Auto Drivers Protection Association. "This will also benefit travellers from other districts arriving by train or bus to catch flights," he said.
