Pune: Online leave and licence registrations across Maharashtra have been nearly stalled for over two weeks due to technical issues with Aadhaar verification.
The problem stems from failed connectivity between the registration system and UIDAI servers, affecting citizens attempting to register documents online.
State Inspector General of Registration (IGR) Ravindra Binwade told TOI on Saturday that he would address the issue with UIDAI officials next week. "We are aware of the problems and have raised it with UIDAI, and they are expected to resolve them in the coming week," he said.
The state registration department had implemented Aadhaar authentication for witnesses during online tenant verification to reduce footfall at sub-registrar offices, but the verification failure has brought the entire process to a standstill.
Officials stated that even as the department prepares to launch updated registration software, these basic connectivity issues must be resolved. Citizens have complained about difficulties in executing registrations on both the new trial software and the existing portal.
Real estate association representative Sachin Shinghavi said that technical glitches, including payment integration issues with the GRAS website, needed addressing. "The IT department needs to address all these issues before launching the system as there is no point in correcting it after launching it," he stated.
His association has submitted approximately 30 recommendations to streamline the process, highlighting cybersecurity vulnerabilities with the proposed Aadhaar OTP-based verification and suggested alternative authentication methods, including email verification and biometric scanning. These alternatives would particularly benefit non-resident Indians who frequently encounter difficulties with phone-based verification system.
They have advocated reinstating authorised service providers (ASPs), discontinued in 2019.
Another concern involves name formatting discrepancies between Aadhaar records and submitted documents, which have resulted in numerous application rejections. The association suggested the system should either accept names as recorded in Aadhaar databases or provide options for formatting corrections.
