Nashik: Road accidents claimed 57 lives in the city between Jan 1 and March 29 this year.
Last year, 58 people lost their lives in road accidents during the same period. Senior officials of the city traffic branch said that rash driving was one of the main causes of accidents.
Officials of the city traffic branch reported a total of 140 accidents in the city from Jan to March-end. In these accidents, 57 people died, 99 suffered major injuries, and 29 escaped with minor injuries. Police officials noted that of the 140 accidents registered with them over the three months, only 10 were reported between 12 am and 8 am when the roads are free of usual vehicular traffic.
While 40 accidents took place on the national highways passing through the city, 12 occurred on the state highways, and the remaining 88 of the 140 accidents were on other roads. DCP (HQ and traffic) Chandrakant Khandvi stated that the city police were making sincere efforts to ensure that motorists followed traffic rules. Those violating traffic rules are challaned on a large scale on a regular basis.
He added that if people followed traffic rules, the chances of road accidents would be minimal. Police officials mentioned that the number of vehicles is rising in the city, leading to more frequent accidents and traffic disruption. They emphasised that motorists must follow traffic rules and avoid rash and dangerous driving for their own safety and the safety of others on the road.
Many motorists also pointed out that vehicle parked on roadsides, encroachments, unavailability of footpaths, and lack of proper facilities for pedestrians were contributing to traffic disruptions and accidents on the streets.
