Amid rising opposition, TMC rolls back garbage transfer station project
Thane: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Monday rolled back its plans to develop a garbage transfer station at the vacant Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj bus depot plot at Mulla Baug. This decision was announced by Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske following discussions with municipal chief Saurabh Rao.
The development comes as a relief to residents who opposed the transfer station plan. . TMC will now scout for alternative plot in the area, Mhaske said amid cheers from local residents.
" We are aware of the challenges faced by the administration in the form of a lack of spaces in the city and some opposition from Atkoli residents also, but we will not allow such activity within residential pockets. Also, garbage should not be kept lying unattended in the area using excuses of inadequate transfer stations," said Mhaske.
On the other hand, Thane Congress blamed the ruling Shiv Sena for failing to take crucial decisions about developing a proper waste management system for a growing city like Thane since its inception.
"The Mumbai Corporation developed the Deonar and Kanjurmarg dumping sites several years back, calculating its future needs, but our Thane ruling parties failed to do so," said Vikrant Chavan, president of Thane Congress.
