Udupi: Deputy commissioner Vidya Kumari K said the police department recommended the suspension of driving licences of 82 individuals involved in fatal road accidents, with 59 licences already revoked. She directed that the remaining 23 licences be cancelled within a week.
Presiding over the Road Safety Committee meeting at Rajathadri on Tuesday, she said temporary safety measures have been implemented in black spots identified on national highways in the district. However, permanent safety maintenance works in these areas must be completed at the earliest. She also directed officials to scientifically install signboards, zebra crossings, and speed humps in front of schools located near roads.
Under the Solatium Scheme, compensation was to be provided to the injured victims and the dependent family members of deceased individuals in hit-and-run cases from 2023 and 2024. The General Insurance Company was instructed to process and approve compensation for the 13 pending cases immediately.
Traffic congestion is increasing daily on the main roads of Udupi city, causing difficulties in vehicle movement. Necessary measures must be taken to ensure smooth traffic flow, she said.
She pointed out that the lack of parking facilities in commercial buildings, unauthorised godowns, and street vendors conducting business on the roads are among the key reasons obstructing vehicle movement. She directed officials to take necessary actions to address these issues.
In Udupi city, more than 58 commercial buildings have shopkeepers and customers parking their vehicles on the roadside, disrupting public vehicle movement. It was observed that many buildings were constructed without adhering to the parking regulations set during the approval process. She directed that notices be issued to building owners to ensure parking facilities within their premises.
The DC also noted that unauthorised godowns, fruit and vegetable carts, and fast-food vehicles around the city's service bus stand and Board High School are obstructing traffic flow. She directed the CMC and police officials to take steps to clear these obstructions.
SP Arun K, executive engineer Kiran S, NHAI project director Abdulla Javed Azmi, Aniruddh Kamath from NHAI, district information officer Manjunath B, contractors, and other officials were present.
