Madurai: The Madras high court Madurai bench has granted conditional bail to nine accused including the superintendent of central excise and chairman of the Central Excise Officers Association (CEOA) School E Samy in a case relating to the attack on CBI officers in Madurai.
Allowing their petitions, Justice B Gokuldas said they should sign at the Tallakulam police station until an order is passed by the court.
All of them offered personal surety and said they would abide by the condition of the court and sought bail. Their bail application was rejected by the lower court, following which they had moved the high court.
On April 8, the CBI laid a trap against the superintendent of central excise S Ashok Raj at his office at Bibikulam as he had allegedly demanded bribe from one Murugandham who is a cable TV operator and caught him red-handed while he was receiving 75,000 from him. After hearing it, a group of people came to the office, attacked the CBI officials, rescued Ashok Raj and fled from the spot.
Regarding it, cases were filed against 10 people including Ashok Raj, Samy and R Muthupandi, driver of the school, by the CBI police as well as the local Tallakulam police. All the 10 were later arrested. Seeking bail they filed petitions before the court Ashok Raj had surrendered before a court in Chennai on April 13, while three others were arrested the same day. Five other accused had surrendered before a court at Vadipatti on April 15. TNN
