Ludhiana MC works on bridges to keep Buddha Dariya in check

Ludhiana: With the old and narrow bridges on Buddha Dariya unable to regulate movement of water in the drain during days of heavy rain, the MC is preparing to construct new bridges at two places on the water body. Work on one site is going on but it is not clear if the MC would be able to get it done before the onset of monsoon. Officials said that departmental delays were hindering efforts.
The civic body dismantled the old and dilapidated bridge near Shivpuri, where a new one is being constructed. Officials claimed that work on the new bridge would be completed before the rainy season. Every year, during the rainy season, weeds and garbage would get stuck in the old bridge, which was also rather low in height. This slowed down the flow of water at this point. The demand for a new bridge is a longstanding one.
A new bridge is also being planned at Kundanpuri, where water from the drain overflows onto the road and streets due to the slow current. Officials said that they were getting the design of the bridge made with the help of Guru Nanak Engineering College, as they wanted to utilise the space of the old bridge along with the new construction to increase the width of the new structure.
The curve in the drain at this location is another issue also makes construction of a bridge a challenge. Meanwhile, officials are waiting for approval of their design from GNE.
A third bridge is expected near Manna Singh Nagar. MC officials said that as the elevated road will now have a direct connection with the railway station, they need to take a U-turn from the point where the elevated road comes to an end. They have proposed to connect the bridge over Buddha Dariya near Manna Singh Nagar with the service road on the other side.
A senior MC official said that with the completion of the Chand Cinema bridge, four bridges will be constructed over Buddha Dariya, and hopefully, residents living near the water body would not have to withstand flooding in their areas.
