Panaji: In an alleged violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification 2011, heavy excavation is being carried out by a hotel establishment on Bambolim beach, damaging the tidal zone and marine ecosystem in the area.
A low compound wall, which existed for decades along the beach in the sand dune area, has been demolished to pave way for the digging work with heavy machinery, AAP member Ramrao Wagh alleged.
In a complaint to Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA), he alleged that “the debris is piled up on the Bambolim beach. In addition, the beach area is excavated with trenches of almost 3metres”.
St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar rushed to the site and has demanded an inquiry into the ongoing work. “This is being done blatantly despite orders of the high court,” he told the media.
The work had been going on for several days, but no complaint had been made to the coastal body by locals.
After Wagh’s complaint, activists rushed to the spot where they could see that the beach had been heavily excavated.
Wagh demanded immediate action “to stop the damage and restore the beach to its original state and also penalise the party”.
