Thane: A gang of five men from Kerala was arrested for robbing a man of Rs 30 lakh near Thane railway station on Feb 21, 2025.
Thane police crime branch unit-1 successfully cracked the case and recovered Rs 10.5 lakh in cash and valuables, said DCP (crime) Amar Singh Jadhav.
The incident occurred around 7.15pm when the victim, a 43-year-old man from Mumbra, was returning home from his workplace in Kalbadevi, Mumbai. The complainant was carrying Rs 30 lakh in cash in a bag. Upon reaching the railway station, he went to collect his motorcycle from a parking lot near platform no. 1, where he was ambushed by four unidentified men.
One of them sprayed a chemical on his face, while the others forcibly snatched his bag containing the cash.
Following his complaint, a case was registered at Naupada police station, and the crime branch officers, acting under the guidance of senior officers, investigated the scene and used technical intelligence to identify the suspects.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Vignesh Poken K, 31, of Wayanad, Suhat Moiuddin Koye TP, 31, of Kozhikode, Prabul Dev Premkumar Pullivata, 27 and Akhil Krishna PV, 27, from Kannur and Subilesh K Balkrishnan, 32, from Kozhikode. During interrogation, police recovered Rs 7.5 lakh in cash and two iPhones worth Rs 3 lakh, purchased using the stolen money.
According to police, all the accused are habitual offenders with no permanent addresses in Maharashtra. They would travel to the state solely to commit crimes and return to Kerala afterward.
