Margao: Two people lost their lives following a collision between a bus and a scooter at Padi, Quepem, on Wednesday night. Police sources said the bus collided with the oncoming scooter while on its way from Balli toward Barcem.
The scooter rider, Sandesh Gaonkar, and pillion rider, Dilip Velip, both residents of Padi, sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. Police sources said the bus driver fled the scene without rendering aid to the victims or reporting the accident.
Velip was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Balli primary health centre. Gaonkar was shifted to the South Goa District Hospital, Margao, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Reports of the postmortem examinations indicated Velip died from “damage to head and chest consequent to blunt force impact”, while Gaonkar’s cause of death was stated as “damage to chest consequent to blunt force impact”. Following the autopsies, both bodies were released to family members for funeral arrangements.
Police registered a case against the bus driver, Rajesh Shivally, a resident of Sirvoi, Quepem, for rash and negligent driving, fleeing the accident scene, and also for failing to provide assistance to the injured victims.
