KOLKATA: If you have got a mail from "
Kabir Suman" asking for money for his cousin's urgent surgery in Madrid, don't act in haste. The rebel Trinamool MP is now in Delhi and not in Madrid, busy attending the Parliament session. It is a fake mail that has come as a rude shock to Suman.
The rebel singer and politician, who'll be back in Kolkata on February 28, is likely to lodge a complaint with the cyber crime cell.
"I've asked people on Facebook to ignore such emails. Once I'm back in Kolkata, I'll take necessary action," the MP said.
Worried with phone calls from across the country, Kabir Suman told TOI that his mail ID account was hacked by the Jamaat-e-Islami group. The MP suspects a Jamaat hand in the mischief and maintains that it could be a reaction to his writing and composing four songs in support of the Shahbagh protests in Bangladesh demanding death penalty of the war criminals during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Of the four, the singer-composer mentioned particularly about his song - "gana daabi"- endorsing the cause of the civil society in Bangladesh.
The mail, which was sent to each of Suman's contacts on Hotmail individually on Tuesday morning, has got the MP anxious. "One of my close friends called up early in the morning and I could realize that my mail has been hacked. But I think the problem is related to the Shahbagh movement. I have lent my support to the movement and many television channels in Bangladesh took my interview on the issue after protests broke out. I suspect Jamaat-e-Islami is behind this act. Even anti-Islamist blogger
Ahmed Rajib Haider, who had written against the group's activities and was accused of blasphemy, was tracked down by his IP address and killed on February 15. The group wants to embarrass me by sending out such e-mails from my ID. The hacking couldn't have happened in India and I'm sure fundamentalists are behind this. I wouldn't be surprised if in the coming days they spread rumour about me in Bangladesh," said Kabir Suman.
The mail which clearly read that the MP is in Madrid and needs Euro 2,500 to make "necessary arrangement" for his cousin's surgery. The mail generated from Kabir Suman's mail account says: "I really did not want to disturb you with this but I had no one else to turn to. I'm in Madrid, Spain to see my cousin (Natalie) who is a missionary there, she's suffering from a critical uterine fibroid and must undergo a hysterectomy surgery to save her life... I need a loan of Euro 2,500 to make the necessary arrangement. If you can help, please let me know to provide you with the details to get the money to me. I will check my e-mail every 30 minutes for your reply."
