Kolkata: Neighbours came to blows in central Kolkata over children playing cricket on the first floor of the residence located at Madan Mohan Burman Street in Jorasanko. A child was allegedly assaulted, and two sets of neighbours came to blows, even threatening the women residing there. The FIR was lodged this weekend after the hospital treating the child advised the family to approach the police.
According to one of the complainants, Tarana Parvin, four children were playing cricket around 4.40 pm on April 13. "Suddenly, the cricket ball entered the adjoining room. There are three other families residing in the same room. A child who was playing with a toy car also accidentally sent the toy inside the same room where the ball had gone. When the children went to ask the house owner to return the ball and toy car, she misbehaved with them and then asked her maid to drive them out. This maid assaulted a child who is just 10 years old," claimed Parvin.
The incident did not end there. "When the assaulted child's father came to know of the incident, he immediately tried to confront the landlady, leading to a confrontation and exchange of heated words. The landlady was reportedly threatened, and she called up her acquaintances. In the fistfight that followed, at least two persons were assaulted," said a senior police officer.
The police said that an FIR has been drawn up at the Jorasanko Police Station, and statements from both sides are being recorded. "We have seen the child's wounds, and legal action will follow," said an investigating officer.
Local residents reported that tensions have been simmering between the families for several months over shared spaces in the building. "This is not the first time such incidents have occurred here. There have been previous disputes over children playing in common areas," said Rajesh Kumar, a resident of the adjacent building.
The injured child was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment of minor injuries. Medical sources confirmed that the child sustained bruises and superficial wounds, which have been treated.
The elderly members of the colony said they plan to call for an emergency meeting to address the issue. "We need to establish clear guidelines about the use of common spaces to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future. Children need space to play, and unfortunately, that scope is limited in our area," said one of them. MSID:: 120487681 413 |
