Kolhapur: Office bearers and INDIA block party workers on Saturday morning formed a human chain protesting the name change of Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK). This comes after some recent demands by Hindu Janjagran Samiti and Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti to expand the name of SUK to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University.
Slogans of ‘Our University, Shivaji University' were raised by the protestors in front of the university's mainadministrative building. Shiv Sena (UBT) deputy leader Sanjay Pawar, district convenor Vijay Dewane, Congress party city president Sachin Chavan, CPI state secretary Satishchandra Kamble and other INDIA block party workers participated.
Vijay Dewane said, "Then Chief Minister Yashvantrao Chavan intentionally gave the name so that every time the university's name is pronounced, the ideology of ‘Shivaji' is also pronounced. If the name expansion takes place, then it will become CSMU, short form of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University. We won't let this name expansion happen."
Earlier on March 17, Hindu outfits under the umbrella of Hindu Janjagran Samiti and Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti took out a protest march, demanding the expansion of SUK's name. Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh, Sanatan Sanstha spokesperson Abhay Vartak, Hindu Janjagran Samiti coordinator for Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh state Sunil Ghanvat and the 13th descendant of Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, Kumar Malusare, arrived in Kolhapur to press the name expansion demand.
